How, and Why, Is the Goshawk (accipiter Gentilis) Affected by Modern Forest Management in Fennoscandia?

چکیده

-•The Northern Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis) is a common raptor in the boreal forest of Fennoscandia (Norway, Sweden and Finland), with a present breeding density of about 3 pr/100 km 2 of forest area. Several independent studies show that goshawk populations in Fennoscandia have declined by 50-60% from the 1950s to the 1980s. This decline coincides in time with an intensification of forest management, which has changed the forest landscape. Among other effects, forests are more fragmented and the proportion of old forest is decreasing. Neither pesticide use nor persecution can explain the goshawk decline. However, changes in habitat and prey populations are both important factors that are affected by forestry. Goshawks need only a small patch of suitable habitat for nesting, but for their foraging home ranges cover 2000-6000 ha, and in boreal forest areas they prefer large patches of mature forest. I suggest that changes in the boreal forest landscape have resulted in a deterioration of goshawk hunting ranges, making it more difficult for them to secure adequate food for breeding. This factor is more important than a shortage of suitable nest sites. Declining prey densities (e.g., grouse) may be associated with forestry and is also an important factor that may affect goshawk numbers.

Habitat Effects on the Breeding Performance of Three Forest-Dwelling Hawks

Habitat loss causes population declines, but the mechanisms are rarely known. In the European Boreal Zone, loss of old forest due to intensive forestry is suspected to cause declines in forest-dwelling raptors by reducing their breeding performance. We studied the boreal breeding habitat and habitat-associated breeding performance of the northern goshawk (Accipiter gentilis), common buzzard (Bu...

When hawks attack: animal-borne video studies of goshawk pursuit and prey-evasion strategies.

Video filmed by a camera mounted on the head of a Northern Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis) was used to study how the raptor used visual guidance to pursue prey and land on perches. A combination of novel image analysis methods and numerical simulations of mathematical pursuit models was used to determine the goshawk's pursuit strategy. The goshawk flew to intercept targets by fixing the prey at a ...

Effects of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident on goshawk reproduction

Although the influence of nuclear accidents on the reproduction of top predators has not been investigated, it is important that we identify the effects of such accidents because humans are also top predators. We conducted field observation for 22 years and analysed the reproductive performance of the goshawk (Accipiter gentilis fujiyamae), a top avian predator in the North Kanto area of Japan,...

The establishment of an urban bird population.

1. Despite the accelerating global spread of urbanized habitats and its associated implications for wildlife and humans, surprisingly little is known about the biology of urban ecosystems. 2. Using data from a 60-year study period, this paper provides a detailed description of how the northern goshawk Accipiter gentilis L.--generally considered a shy forest species--colonized the city of Hambur...

Predation as a landscape effect: the trading off by prey species between predation risks and protection benefits.

1. Predators impose costs on their prey but may also provide benefits such as protection against other (e.g. nest) predators. The optimal breeding location in relation to the distance from a nesting raptor varies so as to minimize the sum of costs of adult and nest predation. We provide a conceptual model to account for variation in the relative predation risks and derive qualitative prediction...
